PMIA: Week 1

Our first introduction class was held online. The lecturer was explaining to us about the evolution of retail experiences, where we are entering a digital age. Everything will involve technology (eventually).

We participated in a small activity with our lecturer and classmates. He asked us to answer 3 questions regarding retail experiences:

  1. What do you like?
  2. What do you not like?
  3. What do you hope to see?

Other than that, the rest of our class was just introducing and getting to know each other. The lecture, in summary, gave me more knowledge on the new world of retail shops; it is no longer just displaying products, rather shops nowadays are selling an experience along with the product.

He gave us examples of retail shops that enhances the consumer experience when visiting. Some that really caught my attention were:

  • Starbucks (Shanghai)
  • Gentle Monster
  • Nike (Shanghai)

Afterwards, we were given our first assignment, which was to visit actual stores to note down the retail experience and present it in front of class in Week 3. We were asked to form groups of 3, and as I didn’t know anyone in class but (kind of knew) Hani, I decided to ask her if she wanted to be in the same group. Hani then recruited Ariana into our group as well.

We were asked to visit a few stores in Marina Bay Sands:

  • Starbucks
  • Gentle Monster
  • Tissot
  • TWG
  • Aesop

We were allowed to choose at least 3 out of the 5 stores that were listed. After forming the group, we discussed on when to meet and which stores we wanted to visit.
